Makoto Shinkai's New Film "Suzume no Tojimari"


 Suzume no Tojimari means "Suzume's Locking-Up". "Suzume no Tojimari" is an upcoming Japanese animated science fantasy adventure film produced by CoMix Wave Films and distributed by Toho. Written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, it features character designs by Masayoshi Tanaka, animation direction by Kenichi Tsuchiya, and art direction by Takumi Tanji, and stars Nanoka Hara as the voice of the titular protagonist.



Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a young man on a journey "looking for doors." Suzume follows him to a ruin to a dilapidated building in the mountains and finds a free-standing, undisturbed door t as if "it" alone were saved from devastation. Suzume feels drawn by an invisible power and reaches out to the door - Soon, doors all over Japan start opening one after another. The doors that opened must be closed to shut out calamity that lies on the other side. -Stars, sunset, and the morning sky. The places she wanders into have a sky where all hours of the day seem to blend together- Beckoned by the mysterious doors, Suzume's "journey of closing doors" begins.



Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese director, writer, producer, animator, editor, cinematographer, voice actor, manga artist and former graphic designer. Shinkai studied Japanese literature at Chuo University where he was a member of juvenile literature club where he drew picture books. In 1999, Shinkai released She and Her Cat, a five-minute short piece done in monochrome. His best knows films are The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004), 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007), Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011), The Garden of Words (2013), and Your Name (2016). It is Makoto Shinkai's first film to be produced in 2:39:1 aspect ratio.



The film is set to release theatrically in Japan in November 2022, and internationally in early 2023.
